South Korea Tightens Cryptocurrency Operator Qualifications Amidst Binance Speculation

Financial authorities in South Korea are tightening cryptocurrency operator qualifications to prevent individuals with records of violating foreign financial laws from holding executive positions. This move, aimed at enhancing market integrity, includes amending the Enforcement Decree of the Act on Reporting and Utilization of Certain Financial Transaction Information. The amendment will disallow those with foreign financial law violations from becoming officers or directors in cryptocurrency businesses. Failure to comply may result in severe penalties, including license revocation. Speculation suggests the amendment targets Binance, which faced accusations of money laundering and attempted entry into South Korea through a stake acquisition in Gopax. The Financial Services Commission plans to implement these changes swiftly, bypassing parliamentary approval, as the renewal deadline for cryptocurrency operator filings approaches.
