K-beauty, K-dramas, and K-democracy

Appointed as the chief judge of this year’s Miss Korea pageant, attorney Shinyoung Choi emphasized that K-beauty is no longer a passing trend, but a globally trusted content built upon a solid institutional foundation — including legal regulations on medical advertising, the obligation to explain and obtain consent for major medical procedures, and the registration system for medical institutions serving foreign patients.
Despite ongoing political upheaval following the martial law incident, she continues to showcase Korea’s enduring appeal to the world. She hopes that the growing international interest in Korea — sparked by K-beauty, K-dramas, and what she calls “K-democracy” — will naturally extend to an understanding of Korea’s constitutional system and democracy, and ultimately lead to sustained trust not only in its cultural soft power, but also in its political institutions.
