The issuance of a “KRW-based stablecoin” has entered discussions in the National Assembly, prompting swift responses from both financial institutions and the fintech industry. However, experts argue that centralized models have inherent limitations, emphasizing that the adoption of a Web 3.0-based decentralized payment system is key to the stablecoin’s success.

Attorney Ohoon Kwon remarked, “Issuing stablecoins solely based on deposits lacks fairness and effectiveness,” and suggested, “There needs to be institutional reform that combines public bidding with technical evaluation.” He added, “Establishing an evaluation committee composed of legal and technical experts, along with setting clear technical standards, can enhance the transparency and validity of the system.”
