Expansion of Foreign Workers’ Stay in Korea to a Maximum of 10 Years

The South Korean government will adopt more accommodating employment policies for foreigners. The government has chosen to broaden the kind of jobs that foreign employees are eligible to work in while allowing them to remain in the country for up to ten years. It is an effort to ease the market's labor shortage and enhance assistance for the foreign labor force.

According to current legislation, foreign employees with an E-9 visa are only permitted a single re-entry and must depart the country after 4 years and 10 months. This has disrupted employment for small and medium-sized firms and encouraged foreign workers to seek out illegal immigration. A new policy permits foreign employees who have worked in Korea for more than 24 months at one company or 30 months or more at a new company to remain in Korea for up to 10 years without having to leave or return.
