North Korea Steals $2B in Crypto: What Do the Law Experts Say?

North Korean cybercrime in cryptocurrencies is surging, with thefts totaling $340.4 million in 2023, including over $200 million stolen by North Korean hackers between January and August 2023. These attacks account for more than 20% of all crypto thefts this year and raise concerns about funding North Korea's nuclear missile programs. Attorney Ohoon Kwon highlights the threat posed by North Korean hackers, driven by economic sanctions.

South Korea plans to introduce legislation to track North Korean crypto assets, despite technical challenges and privacy concerns. International cooperation is crucial to combat these cyberattacks. Cybersecurity challenges persist due to cryptocurrencies' anonymity, with ransomware attacks exceeding $440 million in the first half of 2023. Addressing this issue requires global collaboration, technological advances, and a balance between security, privacy, and the crypto industry's growth.
