National Assembly Cryptocurrency Trading Investigation Reveals Disclosure Gaps
In the last three years, 18 National Assembly members traded cryptocurrencies; 10 didn't report their military discharge while dealing with virtual assets. The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission investigated and sent its findings to Speaker Kim Jin-pyo. The investigation followed a resolution passed after a controversy involving lawmaker Kim Nam-kook's crypto holdings. About 6% of lawmakers disclosed their crypto holdings, mainly in Bitcoin. Some lawmakers had unclear crypto transaction details. Due to legal exemptions, three lawmakers involved in crypto legislation didn't breach conflict-of-interest rules. The ACRC recommended improving Assembly rules for better crypto registration and to prevent future omissions.
